The Houston Area Urban League will celebrate "The Urban League Movement...A Century of Empowerment " on Saturday, June 26, 2010 with its Equal Opportunity Day Gala featuring a dinner and dance.
The night of festivities, which will be held in the Bob Lanier Ballroom of Hilton Americas Hotel, begins at 6 p.m. with a reception followed by the program and dinner at 7:15 pm. Comcast and HBO will present featured entertainment reminiscent of the big band era, conducted by Mr. Barry Lee Hall, Jr., of the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
“Our purpose for this event is to honor deserving representatives of some of Houston’s largest companies — those who help our community through their humanitarianism, corporate charity, monetary donations and local philanthropy,” said Judson Robinson III, HAUL’s president and CEO. “In our 42nd year of operation, our aim is to continue to provide a holistic approach to people challenged in the areas of housing, jobs, economic development, health and education,” Robinson said. “With the general support of Houstonians, we will continue to be successful in these endeavors.” "We are also looking forward to celebrating the National Urban League movement's 100th anniversary."
The Gala is also a key fundraiser benefiting HAUL’s ongoing programs that serve the Houston community in areas such as workforce and economic development, housing and community service, education, workforce training and health outreach. Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin L. Hall, III will serve as the Honorary Chairs of the gala. This year we will honor the following outstanding Houston area citizens: CenterPoint Energy – Quentin Mease Community Service Award, Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals – Marguerite Ross Barnett Leadership Award, Chevron – Gerald Hines Corporate Award, Bill Young Productions – Whitney M. Young Humanitarian Award and State Farm Insurance – Heritage Award.
