Hello, Summer. Glad to See You

Summer arrived quietly this morning, without the thunderous booms that announced Sweet Spring's departure.
Let's keep it that way, please. Bring on the hot, sunny days. Keep the rain coming. But enough of the afternoon lightning that knocks off the power that keeps our lives humming.
Spring may be the season when a young man's -- and we'd say many others' -- thoughts turn to love, but summer is the season that captures our hearts.
And why not?
Carefree days with no school.
Vacation at the shore.
Weekends at the beach.
A plunge in the backyard pool. A splash at the YMCA pool or the Aquatic Center.
Sit back, relax. Take it all in.
Does life get any better?
The summer solstice gives us the longest day of the year, more time to sit outside and gaze heavenward. The skies produce a spectacular show in summer -- with free admission.
Smell the flowers.
Chase the fireflies.
Run barefoot through the freshly mown grass.
This is summer, the season that delights with fresh food from the garden. Crisp cucumbers. All varieties of squash. And corn, kernels bursting with sweetness that only the summer sun can provide.
Melons. Ripe and juicy. Hot days make them better and better.
Even humidity, the plague of an Eastern N.C. summer, seems worth the suffering when the flavor of a homegrown tomato bursts upon your taste buds.
So enjoy summer, just beginning, but too short for the joy it brings.
Savor it while it lasts.
All too soon the leaves will turn. The days will shorten. And another summer will be gone.
