Happy National Taco Day Houston! October 4th is the official day that tacos are celebrated in our country. According to www.nationaltacoday.com, in the year 2012 Americans ate 4.5 million tacos, which is equivalent to 775 million pounds of food. I don’t know what the 2013 numbers are as of yet, but Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen has a variety of palate pleasing tacos that I’m pretty confident will add to the taco eating count this year.

Recently, a few members of the media were treated to a menu sampling at Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen on Woodway. The sampling consisted of a tasty taco sampler plate, charro beans, “Picamole”, and dessert. Our taco samples were: chicken fajita, carne asada, cabrito asado, and the beef carnitas. The tacos were served just as they are in the picture, topped with a fresh slice of avocado and fresh red or green salsa on the side. For those readers who may not be familiar with the terms carne, asada, or carnitas, those words translates to meat, or beef; the word cabrito means goat.

Every meat sample on my plate had a unique flavor, from the chicken to the goat; the flavors were well-balanced and grilled perfectly. The “Picamole” is Sylvia’s unique blend of fresh diced avocados, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapenos and onions; this medley of ingredients was a great compliment to the entire meal. The charro beans tasted like they had been slow cooked all day, the smoked flavor of the bacon was apparent in every bite.

So who’s ready for dessert? Our host at Sylvia’s treated us to a piece of the chocolate tres leches cake; this little plate of decadence was the perfect ending to a great evening. The tres leches cake is made with milk, cream, chocolate, and is topped with whipped cream. We enjoyed this treat with a hot cup of coffee, which seemed to balance the sweetness of the cake.

Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen has two locations in Houston located at: 12637 Westheimer and 6401 Woodway. Treat yourself, take a friend, and let me know what you think.
