The mother of Houston State Representative Sylvester Turner passed away early this morning. Ruby Mae Turner was 90 years old and had been in ill health for a number of years. In fact, Mrs. Turner was placed in hospice six years ago but beat the odds and returned home. Mrs. Turner grew up in Washington County and moved to Houston in 1954 with Rep. Turner’s father. They bought a house in Acres Homes and she lived in that house until she was taken to the hospital last week suffering from pneumonia.
“She was the captain of the ship,” said Rep Turner, after his father died in 1968, “raising nine children with no formal education but a lot of common sense smarts.” Rep. Turner said his mother led an incredible life with a lot of high points, including the first and only plane ride she ever took to see him graduate from Harvard Law School. Unfortunately, in her later years, Mrs. Turner suffered from Alzheimer’s.
“Her journey has come to an end,” said Rep. Turner. “Our family is very, very grateful for the amazing life she led.”
Services for Ruby Mae Turner, mother of St. Rep. Sylvester Turner, have been set.
Services will be held Saturday, December 27th, at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, 5801 W. Montgomery, in Houston, 77091. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made in the name of Ruby Mae Turner to the Alzheimer's Association:
