Coalition to host press conference before 3/13 school board meeting
Parents and community leaders are fighting against the closure of two schools that would displace students in southeast Houston. They will hold a press conference at 3:30 p.m. March 13 as the Houston Independent School District (HISD) board begins its public session. A vote is expected during the session.
“Our coalition calls on HISD to partner with us to keep our schools open and provide a fair and just education to all our kids by engaging parents in the school programming process,” said Gayle Fallon, President of the Houston Federation of Teachers. She says the coalition has an innovative platform aimed at improving the district. “The parents, teachers and community leaders that make up this great city have ideas that the board should consider,” concluded Fallon. Fallon says vocational programs and apprentice training could both meet Houston’s growing Labor demands and engage students simultaneously.
