If there was one complaint logged by Star Wars fans after Disney dropped the tease for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it’s that the footage overlooked the cornerstones of the original trilogy – Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. We all know that J.J. Abrams lured these legends back to the franchise for what amounts to Episode 7. Why didn’t we see them? Well, it turns out they’ll likely be in the next tease, and now we know when it is coming.
Latino-Review confirms what so many of us assumed: The second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be attached to Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which opens in the States on May 1. They even say that the clip will include "all our classic heroes," so expect to finally get your first looks at Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO in character, and in action.
Why did we assume that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be attached to The Avengers? Synergy. Disney owns both LucasFilm and Marvel, and the idea of using one massive tentpole to promote the next massive tentpole makes too much sense to ignore. Analysts expect The Avengers: Age of Ultron to shatter box-office figures, meaning a record number of eyeballs will be sitting in theaters ready to also enjoy a fresh look at The Force Awakens. Giving amped-up Marvel heads a look at Luke and Leia on the big screen? I mean, theaters will melt down with geek enthusiasm!
Also, from a timing perspective, it makes sense. Disney has to wait until December to fully unleash The Force Awakens. And it’s probably that there will be more trailers and TV spots between May and December. But I’m secretly hoping that J.J. "Mystery Box" Abrams chooses to lock down Star Wars after this second The Force Awakens tease. We don’t NEED to see anything else We’re coming. Give us a taste in May, then tell us to come back in December. We’re sold, and showing us too much will only spoil it.
Do you agree? Weigh in below, and also, tell us if knowing a Star Wars trailer is attached makes you more excited to see Age of Ultron… or if you were planning to be in the theater seat, regardless.
