Young folks may credit Rihanna for coining the phrase “B Better Have My Money” – but classic-heads and fans of Blaxploitation films know the punchy phrase really comes from actor Antonio Fargas.
Fargas recited a poem with the same name during a competition for Pimp of the Year in a memorable scene from the classic 80’s film I’m Gonna Git You Sucka The comedy is a spoof of the blaxploitation films of the 70’s and features stars of that era like Jim Brown and Fargas. Now Fargas is giving props to the Bajan singer for repurposing the phrase.
“I was at the premier for I’m Gonna Get You Sucka and Eddie Murphy was sitting behind me and said that scene is the funniest thing he’s ever seen,” Fargas tells WatchLOUD.com. “When you get that kind of co-sign and get guys like Will Smith, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence [giving] you jobs on their shows because they know who’s shoulders they stand… I feel like it’s the same thing Rihanna has seen… this was an opportunity for her to create something of her own. And I take my hat off to her for giving me that respect.”
Rihanna dropped the torture-porn themed music video for “B Better Have My Money” on Wednesday, which she co-directed with the French collective MegaForce. Since releasing the explicit music video online, BBHMM has already garnered over 8 million views.
In related news, it was recently announced that Rihanna had become the first artist to surpass more than 100 million cumulative digital singles by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Though Fargas isn’t seeking royalties from the single, as far we know, he hopes to meet Rihanna soon.
“I have family from Barbados so we have something in common and I’m sure I’ll have that opportunity to smile at her,” he says. “I just want to say well done, Rihanna. I know what it takes to do what she’s doing.”
