Why Jason Momoa Was Totally Shocked By The Aquaman Photo

One of the worst kept secrets in the DC Cinematic Continuum, as well as movies in the past year or so, was the involvement of Jason Momoa as Aquaman. Despite early reports stating that he would be playing the role, he continually denied any claims to that effect and with increasingly blunt affect. Of course, after months of dancing around the subject, Momoa and Warner Bros eventually confirmed the fact that the former Game Of Thrones cast member would be a part of the Justice League. Which makes the story of how not even Jason Momoa knew when his first photo as Aquaman was going out all the more ironic.
Entertainment Weekly ran a recent interview with Momoa, talking about his current series on the Sundance Channel, The Red Road. In the course of promoting the series' upcoming second season, EW hit the superhero button and asked about how the man who will "Unite The Seven" reacted to the early morning tweet Zack Snyder had released about a week ago. For a man who kept trying to deny he was even going to be Aquaman, the answer he gave below shows that he's a lot less shy about his new job opportunity now that it's out in the open.
That was a shocker for sure. It was supposed to be a surprise in 2016... I’ve been holding that secret for a long time. Zack Snyder called me up and said, 'I’m posting this picture now.' He’s just a genius and I love him to death. He sent it over and we’re in the middle of the editing suite for the thing I’m doing right now, and we all freaked out, man. It was so amazing to see it come out.
Considering we all awoke last week to find said picture on our social media feeds, we were just as surprised as Jason Momoa was that we got such an early look at the character who will possibly be making his debut in Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Of course, some weren't all that surprise, considering that costume pretty much matched the rumors we earlier heard floating on the seas.
Perhaps the most interesting part about this whole story is the fact that Zach Snyder became his own publicity leak, as he unilaterally decided to release the photo a year early for all to see. You could just imagine Snyder and Momoa having their excited phone call as the photo is going out, and seconds later texting about the reactions that flooded the internet like a pair of unwitting fans. If this is what Snyder and Momoa are going to be like with every Aquaman reveal, it sounds like the more interesting part about any future announcements will be imaging how much the two are going to react to DC news as it breaks.
In the meantime, you can watch The Red Road as it returns for season 2 on the Sundance Channel on April 2. Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
