MARCH 7, 2015 — HOUSTON — FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Big smiles filled the faces of students as they crossed the stage at the 2015 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program Awards ceremony, March 7. This year, Grand and Reserve Champions were both from the Pasadena Independent School District.
Raina Baggerly won Grand Champion for her art piece, “There’s Work to Be Done,” and Vanessa Sosa won Reserve Grand Champion for her piece, “Come Rain or Shine.”
Baggerly, 18, a senior at Sam Rayburn High School, plans to open up a tattoo shop and art studio after college. She said she has been involved in art ever since she was a little girl.
Sosa, 18, also a senior at Sam Rayburn High School, wants to go into illustrating after college.
“This is something I never imagined happening,” Sosa said. “I spent a month working on this.”
The contest is divided into five categories: colored drawing, mixed media, monochromatic drawing, painting and 3-D. Judging started in January at district competitions. The show recognized 683 Gold Medal, Best in Show and Special Merit winners from 102 school districts.
“This is something they have worked for all year,” Jane Smith, School Art Committee member, said. “My favorite part is when the kids walk across the stage to get their award, and that smile crosses their face. It is just wonderful.”
Each of the students’ artwork was pictured on the screen behind them as they walked on the stage to get their award. Words of admiration filled the air as each piece flashed across the screen.
The Show selected 62 pieces for auction, which will take place Sunday, March 15, at noon in the NRG Arena Sales Pavilion.
