Houston (August 5, 2016) – Susan G. Komen® Houston invites all runners, walkers and breast cancer warriors to join together on Saturday, October 1 at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston for the 26th Annual Susan G. Komen Houston Race for the Cure®, presented by Marathon Oil Corporation®.
Race for the Cure®, Komen Houston’s largest annual fundraiser, allows the organization to continue to fulfill its RACE promise of Research, Advocacy, Community and Education to those in Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty and Montgomery counties. For example, with the help of the Houston KomUNITY (breast cancer patients, survivors, forever fighters, volunteers and race participants), Komen Houston is steadfastly working towards its goal of funding over 16,000 mammograms for the uninsured and underserved community in Houston and its surrounding counties. All donations for the race are vital in helping Komen reach its goal, and every $150 dollars that is raised covers the costs of one mammogram, which can help to change the lives of men and women in the community.
The Race, which annually attracts more than 20,000 participants, also helps to promote the mission of I Am Komen®, Susan G. Komen’s engagement program for the Race for the Cure®. I Am Komen® motivates people to take proactive steps that may reduce their risk of breast cancer. This program speaks to the importance of early detection and healthy living while encouraging everyone to make a personal commitment to their breast health. On Race Day, participants are invited to visit the interactive I Am Komen ® booth to learn more about breast self-awareness and how you can make a declaration to join the Komen community as an ambassador in the fight against breast cancer. For those who are unable to attend the race, participants can opt to Sleep in for the Cure® to show their support for the cause without having to wake up early on Race day.
This year’s Race chair is Cindy Mixon, a five-year breast cancer survivor and active Susan G. Komen® Houston volunteer. Mixon is a passionate advocate for breast cancer awareness, education, screening, treatment and research.
“I am thrilled to serve as the 2016 Race for the Cure Chair,” says Cindy Mixon. “As my five-year anniversary approaches, I am thrilled to reach that milestone but know that there is still much work to be done. I am honored to be a part of the team that is raising awareness for the great work that Komen is doing here at home and I know that the Race for the Cure® will allow us to continue to fund programs that help to bring change and education to our community.”
The Race for the Cure ® is a family-friendly event that features fun and entertainment for everyone and there are many ways to get involved in the fight to end breast cancer from running in the 5k to Sleep in For the Cure®. Race participants are encouraged to register to run (or walk) with their family and friends, create a race team, volunteer, fundraise, and become a corporate sponsor or even a community partner. This Day is a testament to the Susan G. Komen® mission and participants are highly encouraged to share in the spirit of defeating breast cancer.
