Houston, TX (August 31, 2016)—The Red Pump Project invites women and teen girls to an afternoon of empowerment and HIV education as the Cupcakes and Condoms national tour stops in Houston on September 10, 2016 at Houston Business Development, Inc. located in The Palm Center (5330 Griggs Rd) from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Hosted by Houston’s 97.9 The Box Personality Jillian Simmons a.k.a. “JJ on the Mic”, Cupcakes and Condoms will give attendees a chance to learn, connect, and ask questions of health experts in a safe space. Every Cupcakes and Condoms event includes an engaging panel discussion, male and female condom demonstrations, pre-event networking (with delicious cupcakes) and unfiltered and candid “girl talk”. The AIDS Foundation Houston (AFH) will provide Free HIV/AIDS testing with results given the same day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, African-American and Latina women continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV, compared with women of other races/ethnicities. In Houston 78% of people newly diagnosed with HIV between 2010 and 2014 were men, and 22% were women. 50% of people newly diagnosed with HIV between 2010 and 2014 were black, 33% Hispanic/Latino, and 13% white. Because of these alarming statistics, The Red Pump Project decided to make Houston a part of the national 10-city tour providing HIV/AIDS information into the communities of women with significant gaps in knowledge and resources.

The Red Pump Project raises awareness about the impact of HIV on women and girls and uses the red pump as a symbol of empowerment to represent the strength and courage of women affected by the disease. Additional details on Cupcakes and Condoms, including the list of tour stops, can be found on The Red Pump Project website (www.redpump.org .
