6th Annual Houston Kosher Chili Cookoff Hosts Bone Marrow and Blood Drive to Save Lives
Willie Grace | 2/22/2016, 11:54 a.m.
In honor of Mendel Cotlar and Elisha Cohen, the 6th Annual Houston Kosher Chili Cookoff invites the community to its second annual blood drive on Sunday, February 28, 2016 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Due to the success of last year's blood drive, the cookoff has added a bone marrow drive to benefit patients suffering from various blood cancers and diseases who are in need of a bone marrow transplant.
"Mendel and Elisha had remarkably giving personalities, so it's very fitting to honor them and continue their legacy by insuring the gift of life for others," said Devorah Cohen, Elisha's mother.
Donors can join the cookoff's efforts to save lives by donating blood or through a simple cheek swab and consent form to join the donor registry. Registration and donation stations will be located during the Houston Kosher Chili Cookoff at the entrance to the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston. For those interested in donating, please register at www.commitforlife.org or contact the primary blood drive coordinator, Mrs. Devorah Cohen at email@example.com or at 210-913-4408.
The Kosher Chili Cookoff is the largest kosher food event in Houston and celebrates the fellowship of the Jewish community with a day of food, live entertainment, contests, and family friendly activities while raising funds for non-profit organizations in the Houston Jewish Community.
The cookoff attracts more than 3,500 attendees annually for live music, a moonwalk, climbing walls, balloon artists, a jalapeno eating contest and a silent auction as they taste some of Houston's best kosher chili. Cooking teams are encouraged to register for the judged competition so groups or organizations can promote themselves, build teamwork, have fun and reward contributors, board members and staff. Winners of the kosher chili tasting contest will win coveted trophies and prizes presented by celebrity and media judges during the award ceremony at 3:30 p.m.
