River Oaks Park, known affectionately as Pumpkin Park, was established in 1938 on five acres set aside for public use during the development of the River Oaks subdivision. The park has not undergone major renovations since 1990. March 7 was the ribbon cutting for the newly refurbished Pumpkin Park. Improvements include a refurbished Cinderella pumpkin, new playground equipment for a 2-5 year old area and a 5-12 year old area with swings, demolition of a portion of the existing sidewalk, playground and playground border, preservation of existing donor pavers, new sidewalks with relocated donor pavers and new donor pavers, entry gates with decorative columns, and a new pergola and decks.
Funding for these park improvements was provided by former District G Council Member Oliver Pennington's Council District Service Fund and funds from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. Carrera Construction, Inc. is the general contractor, Lauren Griffith, Inc. is the design consultant, and Duncan Elliott (City of Houston General Services Department) is the project manager.
The Friends of River Oaks Park, a 501(c)(3), has established a fund through the Houston Parks Board to raise funds that will go toward future renovations, including updating the historic community center.
