MISSOURI CITY, TX (May 25, 2016) -- The Democratic runoff for Texas State Representative House District 27 ended with Ron Reynolds (D-Missouri City) securing the primary Democratic victory. Reynolds is seeking his fourth term of office.
Despite a heavily contested race by challenger Angelique Bartholomew, Reynolds maintained a lead throughout the night where he received 2,056 votes or 52.91 percent of the ballot.
Challenger Bartholomew trailed early voting nearly 40 percent to Reynolds' 60 percent, and election day with 1,830 votes or 47.09 percent of the ballots casts.
During Reynolds' election night watch party, he delivered the following remarks:
"I want to congratulate Angelique on a hard-fought campaign," said Reynolds. "Angelique's care for issues impacting our families is evident, and I look forward to working with her to implement solutions important to all of us."
"I am thankful and blessed immeasurably by God and am so very humbled and appreciative of his faithfulness. Surely, without His strength and love, I would not be standing. Over these tough months, I stood on my faith that teaches me that no weapon formed against me will prosper. God never fails.
"I thank each and every voter for coming out and acknowledging my strong legislative achievements, dedication to the success of our community, and commitment to honorably serve each of my constituents.
"To every public official who lent their name to my campaign, I thank each of you. I appreciate tremendously your endorsement and your sacrifice of service. I also want to thank the many organizations that helped to make this positive outcome possible. You stood by me and with me, and I am grateful for it.
"I have the best staff and volunteers, and I thank each of them for their tireless support, and hard work to fight for our re-election to the very end. Thank you for your individual efforts, prayers, words of encouragement and advice.
"Most of all, I thank my wife, Dr. Jonita Wallace Reynolds. She is my rock and, certainly, without her love and support, I could not serve the community in this capacity. Jonita is a true partner and rare gem. We both share a deep love of service, which makes holding office that much more enjoyable. I also thank my children, family members and those who are like family to us. Your unwavering support will always be remembered.
"Tonight's victory is our victory collectively. Together, we stood against one of the most negative smear campaigns in state representative history. I'm proud of the voters who were not fooled by the trickery launched on them.
"We were able to overcome the negativity by running a positive campaign based on my strong legislative record and didn't resort to denigrating my opponents. I ran on my own merits."
Reynolds led the March primary election earning 48.46 percent of the votes, with the challenger receiving 24.12 percent of the votes.
Reynolds will face Republican challenger Ken Bryant in the November general election.
