On January 16th the Eta Mu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, inc. hosted their annual MLK BBQ at the University of Houston that brought together service to the community and a good time all while celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Martin Luther King, Jr. had several titles and did many things. The body of his work can be summed up in two words community servant. Annually, King's fraternity brothers of the Eta Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. honor his servant's heart by rendering service to the students of the University of Houston. “We throw a MLK BBQ every year to honor Martin Luther King with a day of service. We give out free food to the students and give them the chance to gather together for a fun laid back time," said Malik Otuemhobe, chapter president. Otuemhobe feels that remembering King is a responsibility that they must to make sure his work is never forgotten and that his legacy lives on. "We must acknowledge MLK because without him this country wouldn’t be as united as it is."

Choosing to focus on unity and other ideals that King stood is keen for the UH Alphas not just on the holiday but in all that they do. Being united is at the forefront of Otuemhobe's mind, especially with the upcoming inauguration of the nation's next president that seems to have split the country. "Yes, I do know from the recent election that this country feels as divided as ever, but MLK did bring light to this country that was covered in darkness in the form of segregation." The brotherhood continues to bring light to the campus of the University of Houston by bringing positivity to rule out any negativity.

The event was able to bring together and serve over 100 UH students. “It was a wonderful experience being around so many other people who are affected and empowered by Dr.King’s legacy”, said UH student, Michala Padgett. Padgett believes this is just the type of event that our community needs right now to bring us all together during such a trying time for division within our communities. “I can see myself attending the MLK BBQ for many years to come and I hope that more people realize how important it is to give back.”
