Alvarez Named Player of the Month for June

First time to win this award; Led AL in multiple offensive categories for the month

Major League Baseball announced today that Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez has been named the American League Player of the Month for June.

This marks the first time that Alvarez has won the Player of the Month Award and the 23rd time that an Astros player has won the award. The last was Kyle Tucker, who was the AL Player of the Month for Sept./Oct. of 2021.

Alvarez was on fire at the plate for the month of June, leading the American League in multiple categories. For the month, he hit .418 with nine home runs and 28 RBI with a .510 on-base percentage, an .835 slugging percentage and a 1.346 OPS. Below are his AL rankings for June:

For the 2022 season overall, Alvarez has emerged as an MVP candidate as he is hitting .316 in 67 games with 23 home runs and 56 RBI with a 1.070 OPS. He currently leads the AL in OPS and slugging pct. (.658) and is ranked tied for second in homers.

Although this is Alvarez’ first Player of the Month Award, he did earn three consecutive Rookie of the Month Awards in 2019 (June, July, August) en route to earning Rookie of the Year honors.

2022 Chevrolet MLB All-Star Ballot

Both Alvarez and teammate Jose Altuve are the AL’s leading vote-getters thus far for the All-Star Game at their respective positions. In the voting, Alvarez leads designated hitters with 2,215,456 votes, followed by Shohei Ohtani, who is second with 1,664,012 votes. Altuve leads second basemen with 1,925,741 votes. Both Alvarez and Altuve have advanced to the second phase of All-Star voting, which begins on July 5 and runs until 2 p.m. ET on July 8. The 2022 All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 19 at Dodger Stadium.
