Ensemble Theatre's 'Beatbox: A Raparetta' Marks Groundbreaking Venture into Hip Hop Theatre

The Ensemble Theatre in Houston is a trailblazer in contemporary theatre, offering a wide range of training programs and workshops for aspiring playwrights, actors, and designers. Their biennial 'New Voices Fest' is set to return this October, showcasing fresh talent. In line with their mission to preserve African American artistic expression, 'Beatbox: A Raparetta' is making its debut on The Ensemble Theatre's mainstage, marking their first major venture into Hip Hop Theatre. Written by Dan Wolf and Tommy Shepherd, this production promises to guide artists and audiences into the next generation of theatre, furthering the evolution of Hip Hop theatre and amplifying the African American artistic voice.
Directed by Rachel Hemphill Dickson, 'Beatbox: A Raparetta' breathes new life into the genre, drawing from Hip Hop history, culture, and music from across the United States. The cast, primarily composed of newcomers to The Ensemble Theatre's mainstage, brings a youthful, energetic vibe to the production. Notable cast members include Elia Adams, Juan Sebastian Cruz, Reyna Janelle, Winston Savice Jr., and Adrian Washington.
To celebrate this artistic milestone, The Ensemble Theatre is hosting a weekly Friday Night Hip Hop Experience, starting with the opening night on March 22, 2024. Additionally, they are curating a temporary Hip Hop Museum exhibit, showcasing the history and impact of Hip Hop culture. The exhibit, located in The Ensemble Theatre's Garnet F. Coleman room, features works from local Houston-based artists inspired by Hip Hop music and culture.
'Beatbox: A Raparetta' will also have two performances in American Sign Language on April 5 and April 6, 2024. This production is poised to be a highlight of the spring season, offering audiences an exciting and insightful experience.
