Dallas County commissioners appointed c to be interim sheriff, making her the county's first black sheriff. Brown, 52, a Democrat who is running for the office, was Sheriff Lupe Valdez's third-in-command and recommended choice for successor. Valdez technically will remain sheriff until Brown is sworn in Jan. 1. Brown will serve as interim sheriff until voters elect a new sheriff in November. Brown said her first priority will be to talk to the staff and learn more about issues in the jail. Brown has been with the Sheriff's Department for three years, most recently overseeing criminal investigations, warrants and traffic. Earlier, she worked her way up over 26 years with the Duncanville Police Department, from a cop to an assistant chief. Valdez, who was the nation's first Hispanic lesbian sheriff, said she recruited Brown to her executive staff after seeing a photograph of her and wanting to know more about the black female chief, a rarity in law enforcement.
