The YWCA of Houston presents “Shoes and Champagne Soirée”, an event benefiting the WYNDOWS Project, an emergency housing and assessment center for victims of Human Trafficking ages 18-24. This highly anticipated event will take place on Friday, September 28th, 2018 at the Deborah Colton Gallery in West University from 6 – 9pm. The goal is to raise $100,000.00 to assist these young women in their transition from victims to survivors.

The WYNDOWS Project, will provide a safe and secure environment staffed by trained experts offering comprehensive and trauma-informed care. By providing housing and support to these women on their healing journey, YWCA of Houston will help women advance to a life of sustainable freedom. Responding to the needs of young women, the WYNDOWS Project was developed by the YWCA of Houston and is one of its signature programs. YWCA of Houston board and staff are very passionate about the issue and knows the WYNDOWS Project is only the tip of the iceberg.

“Shoes and Champagne Soirée is co-chaired by Hector Villarreal and Patty Sturion owners of Lucho Houston. The exciting evening will include hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef DC Williams of A Lil- Bit-A-Cajun and endless champagne. The exclusive silent auction will feature 5 pairs of one-of-a-kind shoes designed by local artist and celebrities. The evening will culminate with the opportunity for guests to design and paint their very own pair of shoes under the direction of fine art painter, Lauren Luna.

Since 2006, the YWCA of Houston’s Center for Women – Gateway has offered lifesaving shelter and care to various at-risk populations from foster youth to homeless women ages 18-24. With experience and passion in caring for the needs of women often forgotten, YWCA of Houston is uniquely positioned to support the welfare of human trafficking survivors as they transition to a better life.

The City of Houston reports there were 2,939 confirmed cases of human trafficking in Texas between 2007 and 2016. Roughly a third of those cases originated in Houston, Texas. The WYNDOWS Project is scheduled to open late fall 2018/winter 2019. “We recognize that we can’t solve the issue alone, the problem is too great, and the need is even greater”, says YWCA Executive Director, Allison Brooks. “This is just one step or leap in the right direction.” The National Human Trafficking Hotline website reports, more than 2,600 sex trafficking cases have been reported in the United States this year alone, and Texas ranks number two behind California.
