In honor of Women's History Month, Houston Style Magazine highlights the works of Phyllis Burton. She is the Executive Director of Nonprofit Organization Sock Out Poverty, Inc.

Her fourteen-year-old daughter, Princess Jackson, founded Sock Out Poverty, Inc. with the mission of making sure everyone who needed socks had them after seeing those at a shelter without them. Witnessing Princess love for the community, Burton got behind her daughter’s mission to lead, managed, and execute Sock Out Poverty' to reduce poverty and restore lives by giving underserved communities a new pair of socks. To date Sock Out Poverty, Inc. has donated over 10,000 pairs of socks to the homeless community, less fortunate, and displaced families in Houston, Beaumont, San Antonio and Dallas. The organization also provides clothing and other material goods to men, women, boys, and girls who are in need or less fortunate. Over 3,000 new pair of socks were given to displaced families in Houston to Hurricane Harvey victims. Their goal is to go global and Sock Out Poverty one step at a time.

Burton is the "mind" behind the business. She has secured donations from national businesses including Walmart, Sam's Club, and The Floyd Mayweather Jr. Foundation. Her love for her daughter and compassion for the community is what motivates her during the daily operations of Sock Out Poverty, Inc. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Masters of Business Administration Degree.
