Makena, HI (KITV) -- A visiting couple has their dream wedding on Maui turn into a nightmare. The newlywed bride ends up partially paralyzed during their Hawaii honeymoon.

36-year-old Nikki Lewis is now on a long road to recovery, after a boogie boarding accident on a Maui beach. According to friends, she and her husband Will always wanted a Hawaii wedding, and married in Kihei on September 8.

Days later, during their honeymoon, the couple and their friends took a trip to Makena Beach, when Nikki was hit by a large wave.

Ja'Mikal Moorer is a close friend of the Lewis' and saw the accident. "It seemed like the wave was just bigger than me standing up and I'm six feet tall, so it just engulfed her; kind of landed on top of her and nose dived her into the sand. Big Beach has kind of a steep drop into the water, so it nose dived her into that."

Moorer says Nikki is able to move her arms and legs a little, but cannot support herself because she lacks the strength in her wrists and fingers. A Go Fund Me page is set up in Nikki's name, to help bring the couple back home to Dallas once she can travel.
