Jackson Lee: “The subpoena of former White House Counsel Don McGahn is key to getting a better understanding of the President’s actions and determining whether the alleged instances of obstruction of justice and other misconduct are impeachable offenses”
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement on the subpoena request:
“I applaud House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) for issuing a subpoena to former White House Counsel Donald F. McGahn II to appear before the full Committee and to answer questions related to the Committee's ongoing investigation into obstruction of justice, public corruption and other abuses of power by President Trump, his associates and members of his Administration.”
“Former White House Counsel Don McGahn is a key witness to many of the alleged instances of obstruction of justice and it is up to the House Judiciary Committee, not the Attorney General, to determine if President Trump engaged in obstruction and other abuses. The current redacted report provides the Committee enough evidence to believe that there are several instances where the President is clearly trying to derail the Mueller investigation. We have a constitutional obligation to fully review the facts of this report by exercising our duties of oversight. This subpoena is the first step to making that determination.”
"The Special Counsel made it clear that they could NOT clear the President of obstruction of justice; therefore, it is the constitutional obligation of Congress to make that determination based upon the facts through the testimony of former White House Counsel Don McGahn, Attorney General William Barr, Special Counsel Robert Mueller and any other Adminstration officials or Trump associates who have information pertinent to the President’s actions.
“The redacted version of the report sounds off serious alarms and I join my colleagues in requesting the Attorney General to release to Congress the fully unredacted Mueller report so Congress can make its determination based on all of the facts.”
“I look forward to hearing the testimony of Mr. McGahn so Congress can fully understand the President’s misconduct.”
