On Tuesday, February, 11, 2020 women around the globe celebrated science via social media platforms, laboratories, field and research sites, including at Bethune-Cookman University.

The Aquatic Research Laboratory (ARL) in the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics is led by Dr. Sarah Krejci, Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences and Integrated Environmental Science (IES). Dr. Krejci’s current students are predominantly women pursing degrees in Biology and IES, most on their way to careers in medicine and research.

Researchers include:

Post-baccalaureate researcher Alyssa Stubbs who is examining feeding preferences of Dwarf Seahorses

Senior biology major Ja’Kaila Jefferson who is examining habitat impacts on pipefish feeding

Sophomore biology major Shalaila Duke a NOAA CCME scholar examining patterns in syngnathid populations in the Indian River Lagoon

Dr. Sarah Krejci, Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences and Integrated Environmental Science

Danithiza Rojas-Torres, a collaborator from Universidad Nacional de Colombia who is busy completing our manuscript on water quality patterns in the Halifax River Lagoon

Post-baccalaureate researcher Jehmia Williams, also completing our Halifax River Lagoon manuscript

Sophomore, Lauren Albury who is examining the impacts of marsh restoration on zooplankton density

"At Bethune-Cookman University we are proud to support and train these young female scientists," says Dr. Krejci. These researchers will be traveling around the state of Florida this spring to share their research at a variety of conferences.
