DETROIT--There is a phrase that goes, “Life comes at you fast.” It is usually reserved for times when things take a sudden turn in your life. I can imagine that life is speeding at some fans of other Major League Baseball teams that do not like the Houston Astros.
They have flooded social media with fake conspiracy theories, bought tickets to boo and heckle, and even held a mini walking parade towards Minute Maid Park. All of that just to watch the Astros continue to go about the business of baseball and having fun while they are doing it.
On Thursday night the Houston Astros defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 12-3 to extend their win streak to 11 games. They are now one game shy of tying their franchise record for most consecutive wins.
"This team expects to win, so they aren't really talking much about a winning streak," said Astros manager Dusty Baker.
The Astros are meeting expectations left and right during this current winning streak by scoring double digits in runs in five of the 11 games and have combined for over 25 runs and 35 hits in consecutive games against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday and the Tigers on Thursday.
Houston, who was swept earlier this season at home by the Tigers established their dominance quickly in the game by scoring runs in four consecutive innings to take an 8-1 lead as the sixth inning started. Center fielder Myles Straw helped produce runs for the Astros as he was placed at the top of the batting order as Baker gave starting second baseman Jose Altuve the night off.
With Altuve out, Dusty Baker wanted to generate problems for Detroit by getting Straw on base, which he did by going 4-for-6 at the plate while scoring three-runs.
“I don’t care how you get on base; I just need you to get on base,” Baker said he told Straw when he informed him that he would be batting leadoff with Altuve out. “When your leadoff man getas on base and he has speed, it makes things happen.”
Astros starting pitcher Luis García (6-4) was also causing chaos and havoc for Detroit striking out five batters and only allowing two runs in six innings. He has been very dominant over his last eight starts with a 6-1 record. That type of production does not go unnoticed by his teammates.
"I think Luis should be an All-Star," said shortstop Carlos Correa who had three RBI on the night. "He deserves it with the way he pitches every time he's out there. This has obviously been a lot of fun. I feel really good, and everyone is getting good at-bats. The pitchers have been great, and we're all making plays."
Houston will be back in action on Friday night against Detroit to try and extend the winning streak to 12 games.
