Astros Defeat The Mariners 5-4 In Extra Innings Thanks To Some Late Clutch Hits

One night after putting up 11 runs on the scoreboard, the Houston Astros needed extra innings to finally put away the pesky Seattle Mariners. Houston defeated Seattle by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings, thanks to some timely hitting by veteran third baseman Alex Bregman and shortstop Carlos Correa.
After going 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and leaving 11 runners on base, the American League West division leaders finally got things going in the ninth inning with the game on the line. Trailing 4-2, second baseman Jose Altuve drew a walk off Mariners reliever Paul Sewald who had been very effective against the Astros this season.
Michael Brantley, who was almost the hero of the game, hit a massive fly ball to right field that barely missed leaving the park by inches for the first out of the inning and that would set the scene for Bregman to potentially tie the game with a home run, something he had not done since June 9 in Boston.
Whatever confidence Bregman lacked walking to the plate, his teammates had it for him in the dugout, which was needed for a player who had missed a total of 59 games due to a quad strain. Bregman worked a 3-1 count against Sewald before sending a 384-foot blast into left field to tie the game.
“I heard at least five players say he’s going to hit a homer,” said Carlos Correa. “So, we knew it was going to happen. He was having great at-bats all day long, and we were expecting a homer from him, and he delivered. He is such a clutch hitter and because of him we won that game tonight.”
Seattle failed to get a run in the top of the 10th inning thanks to an amazing play by left fielder Kyle Tucker who prevented Tom Murphy from advancing from second base. That set the scene for one of Houston’s most beloved Astros player to step to the plate and deliver like he has so many times in the past.
With Yuli Gurriel on second base to start the bottom of the 10th inning, Carlos Correa stepped to the plate to face Mariners reliever Yohan Ramirez. After working the count to 2-1, Correa hit a ground rule double RBI to win the game and increase the Astros A.L. West lead over Seattle to 6.5 games.
"It was an important outing for us knowing that they [Seattle] have been playing great baseball," Correa said in his post-game press conference. "They're close in the division, they're hungry and want to win, so we just had to go out there and make a statement in this series."
