The Houston Astros set their 28-man Opening Day roster on Thursday in preparation for their season opener against the Los Angeles Angels. The roster includes 15 pitchers and 13 position players available for manager Dusty Baker.
Shortstop Jeremy Peña, pitcher Ronel Blanco, and outfielder Jose Siri made the Opening Day roster for the first time in their MLB careers. Peña will take the place in the starting lineup of Carlos Correa, who signed a three-year deal with the Minnesota Twins in the offseason.
Siri will split time at center field with Chas McCormick as the Astros await the return of Jake Meyers, who was placed on the 10-day IL due to left shoulder surgery. General Manager James Click also announced that Houston had added pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. (right forearm strain) and first baseman Taylor Jones (low back discomfort) to the IL.
Per Major League rules set in 2022, clubs can carry 28 players on their active MLB rosters through May 1. On May 2, rosters will return to 26 players and will begin to include a 13-pitcher limit.
