Born on Wednesday, October 7, 1970 at St. Joseph’s, Houston’s very first hospital, Melvyn Everette Huckaby II was the third child of his parents, Ellena Stone Huckaby and Dr. Melvyn Everette Huckaby. “Little Mel”, a fourth generation Houstonian, began his legacy path of healthcare educators and businessmen who served the community, as the great-grandson of Dr. French F. Stone, an entrepreneur and founding physician of the historic Houston Negro Hospital and Cleothilde Cabrere Stone; and as the grandson of French Franklin Stone II and Anne Elizabeth McIntosh Stone, and Arthur Lafayette Huckaby and Artye Meka Henry Huckaby. He joined his older siblings, Eric and Joi Collette, in the family home on tree-lined Fernwood Drive in the protective, culturally segregated Third Ward/Riverside neighborhood.
Mel later graduated from High School for Health Professions with honors and acquired his two MBAs from the University of Houston’s College of Business and the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona.
Inspired by his two grandfathers’ entrepreneurialism and coupled with his business acumen and multiple Spanish dialects, Mel became the ultimate “entrepreneur”. He initially partnered with the owner of a successful property & casualty insurance management company, WPS Global. He later launched, with one of his best friends, Aqua Property Development, a residential property development and management company. They purchased investment properties and went on to open a suite of businesses in the property management industry. Mel was the complete, investment capital-attracting, entrepreneurial package who truly cared about others.
Mel operated businesses in Costa Rica and El Salvador while living there. He married Maria Rosario Gomez twelve years ago and is the father of two beloved children, a daughter, Nicole Huckaby-Chaves and a son, Francois Melvyn Everette Huckaby. After the couple was blessed with their son, they returned to Houston. Maria and Mel were more than a loving couple --- they were also doting parents to Nicole and Francois and partners in Mel’s various property management businesses while sharing their familial responsibilities.
Melvyn Everette Huckaby II was quite the “free spirit”. Beyond his plethora of accomplishments, was a human being who did so much, a man who had such a major impact on more than we will ever know. A true renaissance man!
He made has earthly transition on October 20, 2022. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 @ 12:30 pm @ Wheeler Ave. Baptist Church 3826 Wheeler Ave, Houston, TX 77004.
