The Uncle of George Floyd, having established a charity in his nephew’s name, is breaking ground for a new community space, call center, and affordable housing development. His organization is looking to elevate lives with a project that will deliver employment opportunities, housing, and essential resources for the people of Harrison, Arkansas, a location once labeled the most racist town in America.
Selwyn Jones is the Co-Founder of the Hope929 Foundation, the non-profit focused on promoting civil rights and creating change in honor of his nephew George Floyd. On a mission to make a positive impact for communities, Uncle Selwyn has traveled the country over the last 3 years speaking with the families of other police violence victims and helping with their struggles.
Talking about the groundbreaking set to take place on October 27th, Selwyn said, “This is a full circle moment for our organization, this town is where I met Hope929 co-founder Liz Darden, and it means a lot to us to bring this Gateway Harrison Project to life. We chose to do this in Harrison, Arkansas because we want to show there is nowhere in America we won’t go to help people make their lives better and we plan on trying to bring similar projects to other communities.”
The charity partnered with local land developers and contractors to utilize resources from surrounding businesses and coordinate building a 30 unit housing complex, call center, and community resource center. The Harrison Gateway Project aims to provide at least 50 jobs for residents and apartment spaces with up to 3 bedrooms. It was recently approved by officials and will be a meaningful addition to the town as they continue working to change the reputation of the area, believing it was falsely mislabeled years ago.
Turning adversity and tragedy into an opportunity for improvement, Selwyn and Hope929 co-founder, Harrison, AK councilwoman Liz Darden, are moving forward and pushing for progress to make communities everywhere better for all our children.
