Lamar High School Celebrates Brian Orakpo’s Inspiring Legacy

On Saturday, August 10, 2024, Lamar High School proudly welcomed back one of its most distinguished alumni, Brian Orakpo, a celebrated football star from the Class of 2004. Orakpo returned to tour the school’s newly enhanced weight room, a facility funded by his generous contributions. This special event was not only a celebration of Orakpo's remarkable achievements but also a testament to the positive impact he has made on the Lamar community.
During his time at Lamar High School, Orakpo established himself as a dominant force on the football field. As a two-time first-team all-district defensive end and two-time All-Greater Houston selection, he recorded an impressive 27 sacks, showcasing his extraordinary talent and dedication to the game. His exceptional performance caught the attention of college scouts, leading him to The University of Texas, where he continued to excel as a standout defensive player.
At Texas, Orakpo’s accolades continued to pile up, earning him numerous prestigious awards. He was the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Lombardi Award, the Ted Hendricks Award, and the Bill Willis Trophy. Additionally, he was named a unanimous first-team All-American and recognized as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2008. Known for his incredible strength and work ethic, Orakpo was honored as ESPN’s Top Workout Warrior, further solidifying his reputation as an elite athlete.
Over his collegiate career, Orakpo played 47 games, recording 132 tackles and 22 sacks, and was a key contributor to the Longhorns' 2005 National Championship victory. His journey continued in the NFL when he was selected 13th overall by the Washington Redskins in the 2009 NFL Draft. During his illustrious 10-year professional career, Orakpo also played for the Tennessee Titans, earning four Pro Bowl selections and amassing 423 tackles and 66 sacks.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to sports and the community, Orakpo has recently been inducted into the HISD Athletic Hall of Honor, a fitting tribute to a player who continues to inspire young athletes.
