AARP is excited to announce its support and sponsorship of local screenings of A&E's "The Chicano Squad" in Houston and Austin, Texas. This sponsorship reflects AARP's commitment to uplifting Hispanic/Latino stories and honoring the legacy of "The Chicano Squad," a pioneering group of bilingual patrol officers who were promoted to form Houston's first all-Latino homicide unit in 1979. Known as "The Chicano Squad," these officers earned the trust of both the community and the department, becoming one of Houston's most highly decorated law enforcement units despite facing challenges like racism, corruption, and high crime rates.
AARP Texas Director of Community Strategy, Rosalinda Martinez, commented, "The members of 'The Chicano Squad' were pioneers, and their efforts have left a lasting impact on our communities, embodying AARP's principles of empowering individuals, fostering safe and vibrant communities, and advocating for justice and equity."
The two-night documentary event will chronicle the squad's groundbreaking achievements and highlight their significant contributions to law enforcement and community trust. By sponsoring these screenings, AARP continues to support narratives that showcase dedication, courage, and service.
