The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued a policy this week that bans transgender residents from changing the gender marker on their driver's licenses. The Human Rights Campaign is providing the following statement in response.
“MAGA politicians in Texas are obsessed with targeting transgender people, and it serves no other purpose than cruelty and endangering the lives and well-being of those who are simply trying to exist as themselves,” said Human Rights Campaign Texas State Director Melodía Gutiérrez. “Denying updates to gender markers on identification cards subjects transgender Texans to dangerous encounters with police, health care providers, employers, and others by “outing” them and placing them at risk for harassment, discrimination, and violence. Instead of supporting the actual needs of Texans, Governor Abbott, Texas legislators, and disgraced Attorney General Ken Paxton continue to focus their energy on bullying transgender Texans and creating a dangerous climate for LGBTQ+ people. HRC will continue to fight back against their anti-freedom, dystopian agenda."
