Houston City Council Member Edward Pollard (District J) and seven colleagues are leading a resolution to rename Terminal E at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in honor of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. The proposal highlights her three decades of dedicated service to Houston’s 18th Congressional District and her pivotal role in securing over $125 million in federal funding for the Houston Airport System.
The resolution, submitted through Proposition A, has been championed by Pollard and co-sponsored by Mayor Pro Tem Martha Castex-Tatum and Council Members Tiffany D. Thomas, Carolyn Evans-Shabazz, Abby Kamin, Sallie Alcorn, Tarsha Jackson, and Letitia Plummer. The council members have requested that Mayor John Whitmire place the resolution on the Council agenda for consideration.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee, who passed away earlier this year, is celebrated for her extensive contributions at local, state, and national levels. Renaming Terminal E would follow the precedent of honoring influential figures in Houston’s history, such as Terminal D’s dedication to Congressman Mickey Leland and Terminal C’s naming after former Mayor Lewis Cutrer.
IAH holds particular significance as it is located within the congressional district Congresswoman Jackson Lee represented with distinction. Her daughter, Erica Lee Carter, who now serves as the representative for the 18th Congressional District, supports the initiative.
"Our city has a long history of honoring some of our most influential and iconic public servants with naming rights at our airports, where we can highlight their contributions to Houstonians and visitors to our city from all over the world. Naming Terminal E at IAH after Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee would be fitting of someone of her stature, and ensure her legacy will live on," states Pollard.
The proposed resolution not only acknowledges Jackson Lee’s remarkable achievements but also serves as a lasting reminder of her dedication to Houston and its residents.
