The Children’s Museum Houston (CMH) has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to launch a groundbreaking initiative focused on fostering character development in children and families.

The program, set to begin in 2025 and continue through 2029, addresses the priorities of Houston-area parents and caregivers who aim to instill values such as integrity, collaboration, kindness, critical thinking, autonomy, and respect in their children.

CMH is among 15 children’s museums nationwide to receive funding through Lilly Endowment’s Fostering Character Through Children’s Museums initiative. This selection underscores CMH’s leadership in promoting child development through interactive family experiences.

The Museum worked closely with community advisors, educators, and families to develop a comprehensive plan to integrate character-building into its programs and exhibits. The initiative is designed to empower children to develop strong character through play, learning, and meaningful community connections.

Six Core Strategies for Character Development

Over the next five years, CMH will implement six strategic approaches to promote character growth:

  1. Exhibits as Curated Spaces for Learning – Creating exhibit experiences that encourage exploration and character development.
  2. A Team That Embodies Our Values – Building an organizational culture aligned with the program’s goals.
  3. Gallery Programs with Depth – Delivering engaging and impactful hands-on programming.
  4. Outreach into the Community – Extending the initiative’s reach through partnerships and offsite activities.
  5. Partnerships That Elevate Impact – Collaborating with local organizations to broaden the program’s influence.
  6. Communications That Inspire – Engaging families through creative storytelling and outreach efforts.

A Commitment to Equity and Accessibility

Aligned with CMH’s mission to transform communities through innovative, child-centered learning, the initiative emphasizes equity and inclusivity. Programs will be designed to ensure accessibility for all children, regardless of socioeconomic background.

With close to 140,000 participants annually at over 340 partner locations and 35–40% of Museum visitors receiving free admission, CMH is committed to meeting families where they are. The initiative aims to inspire a sense of belonging and support personal growth in children across the region.

This new program reinforces CMH’s dedication to enriching the lives of children while strengthening families and communities throughout Houston and beyond.
