The Alley Theatre, a cornerstone of Houston’s vibrant performing arts scene, has announced the public phase of its ambitious $80 million Vision for the Future Campaign. Unveiled at the Alley’s Annual Board Meeting on June 24, 2024, this monumental campaign aims to secure the theatre's legacy and ensure its continued contribution to the arts for generations to come.

A Historic Endeavor

“This campaign is the largest capital and endowment initiative ever undertaken by a Houston performing arts organization,” stated Craig Jarchow, Alley Theatre Board President. “The Vision for the Future Campaign ensures the legacy of our founder, Nina Vance, for future generations,” added Butch Mach, Board Member and Chairman of the campaign.

To date, the campaign has successfully raised $67 million, bolstered by a transformative $25 million challenge grant from Cornelia Long, honoring her late husband, Meredith J. Long. This grant, the largest individual gift to a Houston performing arts organization, will match dollar for dollar every donation made, with $12 million already raised towards this match and $13 million left to go. Meeting this challenge will enable the Alley to reach its $80 million goal.

Campaign Objectives

The Vision for the Future Campaign focuses on four primary objectives:

1. Endowment Fund: $31 million - This will double the Alley’s current endowment, ensuring long-term financial stability.

2. Artistic Investment Fund: $19 million - Supporting artistic initiatives over the next decade, this fund will provide $1.5 million annually and support new productions like the 2022 premiere of *A Christmas Carol*.

3. Hurricane Harvey Recovery Fund: $20 million - Covering the costs of flood losses and mitigation improvements post-Hurricane Harvey.

4. Operating and Capital Reserves: $10 million - Establishing a $5 million cash reserve and a $5 million capital improvements reserve.

A Legacy Honored

In recognition of Meredith J. Long’s enduring contributions, the Alley Theatre building has been renamed the Meredith J. Long Theatre Center. Meredith J. Long served as Chairman from 1989 to 1993 and continued as Chairman Emeritus and Life Trustee until his passing in 2020.

Securing the Future

“The Vision for the Future Campaign is a testament to our commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement,” said Jarchow. “It’s about more than just financial stability; it’s about continuing to inspire, challenge, and entertain our audiences for decades to come.”
