Mayor John Whitmire and the city of Houston are honoring the life and legacy of the iconic Founding Pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. William A. Lawson, by illuminating City Hall in the colors of the church logo designed by Lawson - red, blue, and gold. The lights will shine nightly until his celebration of life services.

Today, amidst the hushed reverence of Houston City Hall, Mayor John Whitmire invited Houstonians to join him in a moment of silence—a solemn tribute to the towering legacy of Reverend William A. Lawson, Founding Pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church.

"Rev. Lawson is an icon among icons—a beacon of light whose influence shaped the very fabric of our city," remarked Mayor Whitmire. "His leadership during the civil rights movement and unwavering commitment to social justice have left an indelible mark on Houston."

Indeed, Rev. Lawson's impact transcends mere accolades. Alongside esteemed allies Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza and Rabbi Samuel Karff, he spearheaded efforts to combat systemic injustice, earning him the moniker of "Houston's pastor." Together, they embodied the spirit of unity and resilience, catalyzing change and fostering inclusivity in our community.

Rev. Lawson's legacy extends far beyond the pulpit. Through initiatives like the William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity, he championed the cause of the marginalized, offering hope and opportunity to those in need. His dedication to serving others stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to social equity.

In the tapestry of his life, Rev. Lawson's love for humanity shines brightly. Alongside his beloved late wife, Audrey, and their four children, he exemplified the virtues of compassion and integrity, leaving an indelible mark on all who crossed his path.

As we bid farewell to this titan of faith, let us carry forward his legacy with reverence and resolve. In honoring Rev. Lawson's memory, we pledge to continue his work, striving for a fairer, safer, and more equitable Houston for all.

Rest in peace, Rev. William A. Lawson. Your spirit will forever illuminate our path, guiding us towards a brighter future.
