In a powerful move to elevate accessibility and representation, Mayor John Whitmire recently appointed Angel Ponce, the director of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD), to the METRO Board of Directors. Ponce's appointment, unanimously approved by City Council, not only adds a unique voice to Houston’s transit authority but also underscores a commitment to inclusivity that resonates deeply across the city.
For Ponce, life’s journey has been a testament to resilience. In 2004, after a life-altering car accident, he transitioned to life as a wheelchair user. This personal experience ignited his passion for advocacy, particularly for the disabled community and other historically underrepresented groups. With over 15 years of experience, Ponce is no stranger to championing the rights and needs of people with disabilities. He has been a vocal advocate, ensuring that Houston’s urban landscape becomes more accessible for all.
“Appointing leaders who understand the heartbeat of our city is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my job,” Mayor Whitmire remarked at the city council meeting. “Angel brings not only expertise but a life story that reflects determination and hope. His role on the METRO Board means we’re taking strides toward a transit system that serves everyone, equally and efficiently.”
As the MOPD Director, Ponce has spearheaded various initiatives, including the innovative Pedestrian Access Review Program, which improves sidewalks and pedestrian paths for people with limited mobility. He serves as a vital bridge between the City of Houston, METRO, and organizations that advocate for people with disabilities, working tirelessly to enhance accessibility and awareness.
Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock, METRO Board Chair, echoed the mayor's sentiments. "Angel is a relentless advocate, a beacon of hope, and a force for change,” she said. “His insights and advocacy will elevate our efforts to make METRO more inclusive, especially for those who rely on it most. His experience will complement our Board’s vision to expand ridership while ensuring accessibility remains a core component of the customer experience."
Ponce’s appointment isn’t just a professional milestone; it’s personal. He credits METRO’s paratransit services, especially METROLift, for playing a pivotal role in his journey towards independence. Reflecting on his past, he said, “After my accident, I thought the world wasn’t designed for people like me. But METRO was there, helping me regain a sense of freedom and purpose. METRO was my ride to college, my first job, and my internship at City Hall. To now have a seat on the Board is a full-circle moment – an opportunity to give back to a system that helped me when I needed it most.”
Ponce’s commitment to service extends beyond city borders. As co-founder of the National Coalition for Latinxs with Disabilities, he has amplified the voices of disabled Latinx individuals, advocating for more inclusive policies and practices nationwide. His educational foundation—a bachelor’s degree in leadership and management from the University of Houston—reinforces his dedication to building a city that is not only accessible but also inspiring for future generations.
Since joining MOPD, Ponce has organized pivotal programs, from the Annual Disability Emergency Preparedness Workshop to the Reel Abilities Art and Film Festival, all aimed at educating, celebrating, and empowering individuals with disabilities. His work extends to connecting Houstonians with essential resources, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey.
With Angel Ponce now on the METRO Board, Houston can expect progressive strides towards an accessible and inclusive transit system. As the city continues to grow and diversify, leaders like Ponce remind us that true progress lies in embracing every community member’s needs. As he steps into this role, his vision is clear: to ensure that every Houstonian, regardless of ability, can navigate the city with dignity and ease.
For those who rely on Houston’s public transportation system daily, Angel Ponce’s appointment is more than just a change in leadership—it’s a beacon of hope for a more connected and accessible city.
