"It's amazing to see them learning and growing as we navigate SEL components and integrate the arts within the lessons. It's even more amazing to see the transformations and testimonials from staff about specific lessons students have applied." -Revere Middle School

In an inspiring new partnership, Young Audiences of Houston (YAH) has teamed up with Revere Middle School to bring a unique blend of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and the arts to students. Through this initiative, YAH’s talented Teaching Artists work with students twice a week, helping them unlock their creative potential while developing emotional resilience and interpersonal skills. This innovative approach provides students with practical tools to manage their emotions, strengthen relationships, and enhance their overall well-being—benefits that extend well beyond the classroom.

The program’s impact is already apparent in the students’ daily interactions and self-reflections. For instance, when faced with stress, a student might pause and say, “I just need to remember to breathe,” or express newfound positivity with, “Wow! I feel so much lighter! This day is great!” These small but powerful moments highlight the program’s success in creating a supportive environment where students feel empowered, grounded, and ready to embrace each day’s challenges.

In addition to fostering calmness and relaxation, this program provides skills that students can immediately apply in various aspects of their lives. From collaborative art projects to managing friendships, they’re better equipped to navigate the complexities of middle school with empathy, confidence, and self-awareness. The arts, in this context, become a transformative tool for both personal growth and academic success.

YAH is excited to witness the progress of Revere Middle School students and to continue this meaningful partnership. Together, they are nurturing a new generation of leaders who are not only academically prepared but also emotionally intelligent, compassionate, and ready to make a positive difference in their communities.
