Thanksgiving is more than turkey and pumpkin pie; it’s a time to give back, spread joy, and foster community spirit. This year, the Business Services division of the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE) delivered a hearty dose of holiday cheer to two deserving families at Compton Head Start. The initiative, led by the warm-hearted and festive Dr. Jesus Amezcua, HCDE’s assistant superintendent of business services, is a cherished tradition that’s as heartwarming as a fresh-out-of-the-oven pie.
A Basket of Blessings
On November 21, the Business Services team made their way to the Compton Head Start campus, arms full of Thanksgiving baskets packed with love and essential goodies. These weren’t your average baskets. They brimmed with fresh fruits, vibrant vegetables, and canned goods perfect for crafting a Thanksgiving feast. And the pièce de résistance? A turkey voucher, ensuring that these families could enjoy the quintessential centerpiece of the holiday table.
The recipients, selected for their need for assistance, were caught completely off guard by this thoughtful surprise. The joy and gratitude on their faces reminded everyone present of the true spirit of the season: coming together to support and uplift one another.
Dr. Amezcua: A Santa of Many Seasons
Dr. Jesus Amezcua is no stranger to the families at Compton Head Start. A dedicated Head Start SuperMENtor, he regularly reads to students, fostering a love for stories and learning. But his commitment doesn’t stop there. Each December, he dons the iconic red suit and white beard to transform into Santa Claus, spreading holiday magic and delighting children with his jolly demeanor.
Dr. Amezcua began the tradition of adopting Compton Head Start families years ago, and he’s kept the tradition alive with unwavering enthusiasm. Supported by his team, he has made it his mission to bring joy and support to these families, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and cared for during the holiday season.
The Power of Community
This heartfelt gesture underscores the importance of community and the profound impact of small acts of kindness. For the families at Compton Head Start, these Thanksgiving baskets are more than just meals. They’re a reminder that they are part of a community that cares deeply for their well-being and success.
For the Business Services division, this tradition is more than an annual event. It’s a testament to the power of giving back and the joy that comes from making a difference in the lives of others. As Dr. Amezcua and his team continue to lead with compassion and dedication, they inspire others to do the same.
A Season to Remember
Thanksgiving at Compton Head Start isn’t just about food; it’s about fostering connections, creating memories, and ensuring that no family feels left behind during the holidays. The Business Services team’s commitment to this mission is a shining example of what the season is all about: gratitude, generosity, and genuine care for our neighbors.
