In a powerful stand against the escalating assault on women’s reproductive rights, Congressman Al Green, State Senator Molly Cook, Commissioner Lesley Briones, State Representative Ron Reynolds, and other influential community leaders gathered for a pivotal press conference in Houston. The event highlighted the critical need to protect women’s bodily autonomy and push back against restrictive abortion laws that continue to endanger lives across Texas.
Congressman Al Green emphasized, “Women should never be denied the right to control their own bodies. It’s an archaic and unacceptable reality. Since Texas' 2021 abortion ban, maternal mortality rates have skyrocketed by 56%, according to a September 2024 NBC News report. Senate Bill 8 criminalizes abortion assistance after six weeks unless in cases of medical emergencies, turning miscarriages into criminal investigations. This must end. We are here to demand the reinstatement of reproductive healthcare and safeguard women's lives and health."
The leaders united to call for action in addressing the dire consequences of Texas' abortion restrictions and their impact on women's health, urging lawmakers to protect women's rights to choose, free from governmental interference.
