Houston resident, training psychologist, and mental health advocate Corissa Barrow has been named the 2024 Deja tu Huella Ambassador by Cheetos and global superstar J Balvin. As part of this honor, Barrow will receive $25,000 and the opportunity to join Cheetos on the Cheetos Community College Tour.
Barrow has made a significant impact in her local community and beyond by championing mental health education among young adults in the Hispanic community. She is the founder of the MIND Project, an initiative designed to advance mental health awareness and expand resources specifically for Hispanic populations. Through her organization, Barrow employs innovative methods such as music, dance, and virtual reality to break the stigma surrounding mental health resources and create equitable access.
With the funding from Cheetos, Barrow plans to expand the MIND Project’s virtual reality and neurofeedback workshops, which provide free coping skills for stress, anxiety, and depression. These workshops aim not only to equip participants with valuable techniques but also to foster a community where prioritizing mental wellness is the norm.
The Deja tu Huella program, which translates to “Leave Your Mark,” is a Cheetos initiative that celebrates individuals in the Hispanic community who are passionately working to create positive change. This summer, Cheetos, in collaboration with J Balvin, sought to find a new ambassador dedicated to pursuing their dreams and making an impact in their community.
After reviewing numerous compelling submissions, Barrow was selected for her dedication to advancing mental health education among young adults. She was officially announced as the newest Deja tu Huella Ambassador by J Balvin during a ceremony at Billboard Latin Music Week.
Currently a training psychologist at the University of Houston, Barrow continues to work tirelessly to expand mental health resources and education for underserved populations. More information about Corissa Barrow and her plans for the MIND Project can be found through the Cheetos Deja tu Huella initiative.
