Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo joined Harris County Public Library (HCPL) Executive Director Edward Melton, Friends of the Library President Susan Greer, viral sensation John "Curbside Larry" Schaffer, community leaders, and HCPL staff at the Barbara Bush Library on Wednesday to celebrate National Book Month and National Friends of the Library Week.

This year's observance marks the 19th annual National Friends of the Library Week, a time dedicated to acknowledging the crucial role of organizations that support libraries through fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer efforts.

The event also highlighted the remarkable achievements of HCPL, which earlier this year received the 2024 National Medal for Library Service, the highest honor for libraries in the United States. This recognition was awarded for various programs, including initiatives that assist individuals in navigating the naturalization process, expand digital literacy, and support early childhood education.

Before the celebration, Judge Hidalgo took the opportunity to apply for her own Harris County Public Library Enhanced Library Card, a full-service library card that also serves as a verified photo ID. Her visit included participation in the library’s storytime program, where she read a children’s book to preschoolers and cast her vote in a pumpkin decorating contest.
