Meet Petty Officer 2nd Class Kalani Duong, a proud native of League City, Texas, who is making waves aboard the USS Kearsarge, a U.S. Navy warship based out of Norfolk, Virginia. With a journey that began at Clear Creek High School, where she graduated in 2019, Duong embodies the spirit of determination and service that resonates deeply within the heart of Houston.

A Texas Foundation

Duong attributes much of her success to the values instilled in her during her formative years in Texas. "I definitely learned the strictness of routine and the value of teamwork growing up," she reflects. "Those lessons translate directly to success in the Navy. We don’t do anything alone; discipline is key."

Joining the Navy four years ago, Duong took a bold step not just for herself, but to break new ground for her family. "I wanted to be the first woman in my family to serve," she shares. "Plus, I knew it would be a great opportunity to learn about different cultures and skills that would help me become an NCIS agent."

Life Aboard the USS Kearsarge

As an operations specialist on the USS Kearsarge, Duong is part of a dynamic crew of approximately 1,200 sailors, with the capability to accommodate up to 1,800 Marines. The Kearsarge, a third ship in the Wasp class of multipurpose amphibious assault ships, plays a crucial role in transferring Marines, equipment, and supplies, while supporting aircraft operations. Its mission underscores a vital truth: with 90% of global commerce traveling by sea, a robust Navy is essential for the prosperity of the United States.

Achievements and Pride

In her short tenure, Duong has made impressive strides. "I am proudest of making E-5 in just two years and becoming qualified as an air intercept controller," she boasts. "I'm the only one on the ship with that qualification, which led to my selection as Sailor of the Quarter in my department."

As she continues to train and perform critical missions, Duong takes immense pride in serving her country. "Being in the Navy means I belong to something bigger than myself. It also means I represent my country and help enforce stability around the world."

Gratitude and Future Aspirations

Duong credits her family for their unwavering support throughout her journey. "I want to thank my mother and step-father, Crystal and Kyle Aaron, and my father, Mike Duong, for always being there for me, especially when I decided to join the Navy," she expresses. "They may not have wanted me to join, but they understood it was important to me."

Looking ahead, Duong plans to balance her military career with her education. "I want to stay in long enough to take a shore billet so I can finish my degree in criminal justice," she reveals. With just 20 credits left, she’s on the cusp of achieving another personal milestone.

 A Hero in the Making

Petty Officer Kalani Duong’s story is a testament to the power of determination, family support, and the pursuit of a greater purpose. As she navigates the challenges and triumphs of military life, her journey inspires not just her fellow sailors but also the community back home in Houston.

With every wave she rides and every mission she undertakes, Duong exemplifies the spirit of the Navy and the pride of Texas. She is not just serving her country; she is shaping her future—one disciplined day at a time.
