This fall, Houston’s streets will turn pink for one of the most inspiring and impactful events of the year. The Susan G. Komen® Race for the Cure returns to the Bayou City, bringing together survivors, supporters, and advocates to raise critical funds for breast cancer research and patient support services. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 5, 2024, and get ready to lace up your running shoes at Sam Houston Park to stand alongside a community determined to make breast cancer history.

A Race with a Purpose

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is more than just a run; it’s a movement. Every step taken and every dollar raised during this event goes toward providing life-saving resources and treatments for those affected by breast cancer. With 1 in 8 women in the U.S. expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, this cause touches nearly everyone, either directly or through loved ones.

The statistics are sobering: In 2024 alone, 23,290 women in Texas will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 3,280 will lose their lives to the disease. But hope is on the horizon. Experts believe that one-third of these deaths could be prevented with universal access to modern treatments. The funds raised at this year’s Race for the Cure will help bridge that gap, providing crucial support and services to those fighting breast cancer right now.

Beyond the Finish Line: Support That Saves Lives

The Komen Financial Assistance Program has been a beacon of hope for many, offering direct financial aid to breast cancer patients in Texas. In 2024, the program has already provided $1,257,750 in financial assistance to more than 2,267 people undergoing treatment or living with metastatic breast cancer. But that’s just part of the story.

Komen’s Patient Care Center has also been hard at work, delivering 7,796 services to over 6,259 Texans, addressing barriers to care like transportation, insurance issues, and treatment access. From emotional support to navigating the often-overwhelming healthcare system, Komen’s efforts are creating a ripple effect of positive change in the lives of thousands.

Houston, Let's Walk, Run, and Cure Together

“We are beyond thrilled to host this year’s Houston Race for the Cure, where the community can unite and make a real, lasting impact in the fight against breast cancer,” says Brandice Pierre, Executive Director of Komen Houston. “This is more than just a race—it's an opportunity for everyone to contribute to a cause that affects so many lives. Together, we can secure vital funds that ensure equitable care for all, regardless of background or income. The more voices, the more impact. So, come out, bring your friends, family, and colleagues, and let’s take a stand against this devastating disease.”

The day kicks off bright and early with onsite registration and packet pick-up starting at 6:00 AM, followed by the Opening Ceremony at 7:15 AM. The race itself begins at 8:00 AM, with the day’s festivities culminating in the Runners Award/Survivor Celebration at 9:30 AM. Expect tears, laughter, and moments of heartfelt connection as Houston honors its breast cancer survivors and remembers those lost.

Powered by Partnership: Sponsors Leading the Charge

This year’s race is powered by major sponsors who share the Komen mission. Bank of America takes the spotlight as the national presenting sponsor, while Walgreens, Novartis, and Lily are on board as national series sponsors for both the Race for the Cure and the MORE THAN PINK Walk.

These partnerships are more than just logos on race day—they are an integral part of ensuring the funds raised go toward research breakthroughs, patient support, and advocating for access to quality care.

Why You Should Join the Race for the Cure

While the stats might paint a grim picture, events like the Race for the Cure are beacons of hope. Your participation—whether you're running, walking, donating, or simply cheering from the sidelines—helps fuel groundbreaking research that could lead to the next life-saving treatment. It also ensures that breast cancer patients in our community get the financial, emotional, and medical support they need to face this disease with dignity and strength.

Houston, we’ve always been a city that rallies in the face of adversity. Let’s show up in force this October, in our pinkest gear, and race for a world where breast cancer is no longer a death sentence.
