As Houston ushers in February, Council Member Dr. Carolyn Evans-Shabazz of District D reminds us that Black History Month is not just a moment of remembrance—it’s a call to action. It is a time to honor the resilience, achievements, and legacy of Black leaders who have shaped our nation while committing to progress, unity, and equity for all.
"This month serves as a powerful reminder of the contributions of Black trailblazers—past and present—who have fought for justice, equality, and opportunity," Dr. Evans-Shabazz shares. "Let us celebrate their legacies while carrying forward their mission to build stronger, more inclusive communities."
Weathering the Storm: Houston’s Strength and Adaptability
Last month’s unseasonably snowy weather put Houston’s resilience to the test. Despite the challenges, residents of District D once again demonstrated patience, perseverance, and a deep-rooted sense of community.
"Houston is a city that always pushes forward, no matter the obstacles. I am grateful for our residents’ adaptability and unwavering spirit," says Dr. Evans-Shabazz.
A Commitment to Cleaner, Safer Communities
Illegal dumping and unresolved 311 service requests remain at the forefront of District D’s priorities. Dr. Evans-Shabazz reassures residents that her office is working tirelessly to address these concerns, ensuring that neighborhoods remain clean, safe, and well-maintained.
"We are steadfast in our mission to tackle illegal dumping and community maintenance issues. If your request has not yet been addressed, please know that we are actively working to resolve it," she affirms.
She also encourages residents to continue reporting issues and advocating for their neighborhoods, reinforcing that community engagement is a powerful tool for change.
Amplifying Houston’s Vibrant Arts Community
Houston is a city rich in culture and artistic expression, and in 2025, District D will place an even greater emphasis on supporting local artists, public art initiatives, and cultural investments.
"Art is the heartbeat of our city—it tells our stories, preserves our history, and inspires future generations. Through public art projects and community partnerships, we will continue to elevate the incredible talent that makes Houston unique," Dr. Evans-Shabazz shares.
This initiative aims to bring more murals, installations, and creative spaces to Houston’s neighborhoods, ensuring that art remains accessible and representative of the city’s diverse voices.
Looking Ahead: A Year of Growth and Progress
As Houston moves forward in 2025, Dr. Evans-Shabazz invites residents to stay engaged, speak up, and be active participants in shaping the future of District D.
"Together, we can create a community that is stronger, more vibrant, and full of opportunities for all," she emphasizes.
Her office remains committed to listening, advocating, and implementing policies that uplift and empower every resident.
