Houston’s hospitality sector has soared to new heights in 2024, setting unprecedented records across multiple metrics, from convention bookings to hotel performance and air passenger traffic. The city’s reputation as a top-tier destination for business and leisure travelers continues to strengthen, fueling economic growth and job creation.

Record-Breaking Visitor Numbers and Economic Impact

According to preliminary projections, Houston welcomed over 54 million visitors in 2024—an impressive 6% increase from 2023 and nearly 10% above pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The Houston First Corporation (HFC), the region’s leading destination marketing organization, anticipates similar growth when final regional visitation figures are released this spring.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire praised these developments, stating, “Last year’s record visitor numbers demonstrate that Houston is heading in the right direction. Our efforts to promote Houston and attract conventions and tourists are creating jobs, generating spending, and driving commerce in our community. Houston First’s exceptional work is a vital part of our city’s economic development strategy.”

Convention & Hotel Industry Milestones

Houston’s convention and meetings sector played a significant role in the hospitality boom. In 2024, events booked by Houston First resulted in approximately 740,000 room nights, surpassing the previous record of 733,000 set in 2019. Additionally, the HFC Sales team secured 759 future meetings, accounting for nearly 862,000 room nights—a remarkable 25% increase over 2023.

Michael Heckman, President and CEO of Houston First, attributed the success to strategic planning and a dedicated team. “Our focus has been laser-sharp on driving business for the hospitality sector and elevating Houston’s broader economy. The record-breaking numbers prove our efforts are working. As we move forward into 2025, we’re positioned to build on this momentum with exciting new projects.”

Houston’s hotels also experienced unprecedented growth in 2024. More than 25 million room nights were booked—an 8.2% increase from 2023. Market-wide occupancy rose by 7.7%, with average daily rate (ADR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR) increasing by 6.8% and 15%, respectively. Total revenue for the hotel industry hit a new all-time high, marking a 15.5% jump over the previous record in 2023.

Air Travel & Employment Gains

Houston’s two major airports, George Bush Intercontinental and Hobby, also reported record-setting passenger traffic. More than 63 million travelers passed through their gates in 2024, a 5% increase from the previous year. Bush Intercontinental saw a 4.9% rise in traffic, while Hobby experienced a 5.1% surge. Peak travel seasons, including summer holidays and year-end festivities, contributed to these numbers.

The leisure and hospitality sector remains a vital part of Houston’s workforce, employing nearly 362,600 individuals—up 1.5% from 2023. The Greater Houston Partnership projects an additional 7,600 jobs will be added to the industry in 2025, reinforcing its role as the region’s fourth-largest employment sector.

Marketing Efforts & Future Growth

Houston’s success as a premier destination is no accident—it’s the result of extensive marketing and public relations efforts. In 2024, Houston First hosted 114 journalists, generating 715 feature stories—an impressive 60% increase over 2023. The VisitHouston.com website saw over 5.9 million visits, a 12% year-over-year jump. Additionally, 35 influencers from the U.S. and Mexico helped amplify Houston’s appeal, reaching an audience of more than 50 million people.

Looking ahead, Houston First kicked off 2025 by hosting the 25th annual PCMA Convening Leaders conference at the George R. Brown Convention Center. This prestigious event brought nearly 4,000 meeting planners and industry leaders to the city, with the potential to generate $200 million in future business. Later this year, the IAEE Expo! Expo! will welcome 2,000 global exhibition professionals, further solidifying Houston’s reputation as a leading convention destination.

Several new hotels, cultural centers, and arts venues are slated to open in 2025, ensuring Houston remains a top-tier travel destination. With continued economic expansion and a dynamic event calendar, Houston’s hospitality industry is poised for another record-breaking year.

Final Thoughts

Houston First Board Chair Jay Zeidman summed up the city’s remarkable evolution, stating, “Each year, more visitors from around the world come to experience Houston’s dynamic culture, major events, and unmatched hospitality. Our city continues to shine as a premier destination for conventions, business, and leisure travelers.”
