Former Houston City Council Member Amanda Edwards has officially launched her campaign for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, previously represented by the late Sheila Jackson Lee and the late Sylvester Turner. Surrounded by community stakeholders in Houston’s historic 5th Ward, Edwards announced her bid with a commitment to breaking through political gridlock and delivering tangible results for the district.
A Houston native, Edwards emphasized her deep roots in the community and her track record of public service. She has served as an attorney, nonprofit leader, and at-large City Council Member, where she worked on initiatives supporting small businesses, disaster recovery, and infrastructure development.
During her tenure on City Council, Edwards focused on securing resources for women- and minority-owned businesses, mobilizing hurricane recovery efforts, and spearheading the development of Houston’s Innovation District. Her work extended to improving transportation options and infrastructure to enhance quality of life for residents.
Edwards' campaign platform includes addressing economic challenges such as rising grocery prices, improving schools, roads, and housing, and expanding healthcare access. She also expressed her commitment to protecting reproductive rights and Social Security benefits.
“I want to take a moment to recognize the life and legacy of the late Sylvester Turner and the late Sheila Jackson Lee. Both served our district and our city as true servant leaders,” Edwards stated. “As we move into such an unprecedented time, I’m going to give every ounce of what I have to deliver for this district and fight to protect our rights, jobs, schools, and healthcare. It is time to put the people over politics and to deliver real change for our community.”
Kathryn McNiel, spokesperson for Edwards' campaign, emphasized Edwards’ experience and dedication to the district. “Amanda will not hide from the challenges facing this district. She is an experienced elected leader who will use all the tools at her disposal in service of the people of this district. This community is her heart and always has been.”
In addition to her public service, Edwards has been active on numerous boards and committees, including the National League of Cities Board of Directors, the Advisory Council for Accelerator for America, and the Houston Exponential Board of Directors. She has also served as President of the Board of Directors for Project Row Houses in the Historic Third Ward community.
Edwards is a graduate of Eisenhower High School in Aldine ISD and earned a degree in political science from Emory University, where she served as student body president. She later obtained her law degree from Harvard Law School. A lifelong member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Acres Homes, she continues to be deeply engaged in the community.
With her strong community ties and fundraising ability, Edwards positions herself as a leading contender in the race, as the field of candidates continues to develop.
