As Prairie View A&M University celebrates its historic 150th anniversary, the institution is honoring its rich musical heritage with the creation of the Prairie View A&M University Sesquicentennial Celebration Choir, a signature ensemble designed to commemorate the university’s legacy through the power of music.

For generations, music has been woven into the fabric of Prairie View A&M University’s history, serving as a centerpiece of chapel services, commencement ceremonies, concert performances, and athletic traditions. The new choir will represent the university’s 150-year journey of excellence, resilience, scholarship, and service while highlighting the voices and talents of generations of Panthers.

Leading the Sesquicentennial Celebration Choir will be internationally recognized conductor, scholar, and educator Dr. Jeffrey Allen Murdock, who will serve as the university’s Sesquicentennial Artist-in-Residence Choir Director. A nationally respected authority on Black sacred music, Dr. Murdock has dedicated his career to preserving and advancing musical traditions that have shaped African American communities.

Dr. Murdock is the recipient of the 2021 GRAMMY Music Educator Award and has conducted ensembles throughout the United States and internationally. He made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut in 2013 and currently serves as professor in the practice of sacred music and associate director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Music and the Black Church at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Yale Divinity School.

The appointment reflects Prairie View A&M University’s longstanding commitment to musical excellence. Throughout its history, the university has cultivated acclaimed musicians, educators, conductors, and composers whose contributions have extended beyond the campus and influenced the broader cultural landscape.

Among those who helped shape Prairie View’s musical legacy is Dr. Robert A. Henry, a visionary educator and founder of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild, who established a foundation of artistic achievement and cultural preservation. That tradition continued through Dr. Danny Kelley, an internationally recognized pianist, educator, and former dean whose leadership elevated Prairie View’s music program. The university’s musical influence also expanded through George Edwards, whose leadership transformed The Marching Storm into one of the nation’s most recognized Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching bands.

Founded in 1876, Prairie View A&M University is the second-oldest public institution of higher education in Texas and one of the nation’s most historic Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). As a member of the Texas A&M University System, the university continues its mission of teaching, research, and service while preparing generations of students for leadership and success. The institution was established to provide educational opportunities for Black Texans following the Civil War and has grown into a nationally recognized university offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across a wide range of disciplines.

Throughout the sesquicentennial year, the choir will serve as one of Prairie View A&M University’s premier artistic ambassadors, performing at milestone celebrations and select community engagements that honor the institution’s history and impact.

The ensemble represents more than a commemorative performance group. It serves as a tribute to the generations of students, alumni, faculty, and supporters whose voices have helped shape Prairie View A&M University’s 150-year legacy.

As Prairie View A&M University begins its next century and a half, the Sesquicentennial Celebration Choir will help carry the Panther legacy forward, celebrating the institution’s history while inspiring future generations through music, culture, and community.
