Major contributions will support financial aid, organizational sustainability and expanded access to music education for Houston-area youth.

Houston-area young musicians will have expanded opportunities to learn, perform and grow through a $1.2 million investment in the Houston Youth Symphony as the organization celebrates its 80th season.

The two anonymous gifts include $1 million designated for the long-term sustainability of Houston Youth Symphony and another $200,000 specifically designated for its Coda Music Program, a free after-school program providing music education to students who may face barriers to accessing arts instruction.

The gifts come as the need for affordable music education continues to grow across the Houston area. HYS currently has more than 100 musicians receiving financial aid, while applications for its audition-based programs continue to increase each year. At the same time, cuts to in-school music programs have reduced opportunities for some students to receive music instruction.

The new funding will support financial aid awards, artistic programming, community outreach and expanded access to music experiences for young people throughout the region.

Expanding Access to Music Education

The Coda Music Program is designed to reach students in underserved communities with free music instruction, mentorship, resources and performance opportunities.

The program is part of HYS’s broader community outreach efforts, which currently provide free, high-quality music instruction to more than 250 children through Coda and the organization’s Melody program.

Since 2005, Melody has provided private music lessons to talented young people who have limited access to music instruction beyond their school programs. The program serves eligible students in the HYS Youth Orchestra Program, as well as students at Marshall Middle School and Northside High School in the Near Northside area and surrounding Houston communities.

The $200,000 Coda gift will provide additional resources to expand that work and reach more students.

Training the Next Generation of Musicians

Houston Youth Symphony provides classical music education and performance opportunities to young musicians ages 7 to 19.

Its Youth Orchestra Program currently serves 430 students selected through auditions and placed in one of five orchestras based on skill level. The program includes three Full Orchestras and two String Orchestras, giving young musicians opportunities to develop their skills through professional coaching, rehearsals and performances.

The organization’s 80th season marks a milestone for a program that has provided generations of Houston-area students with opportunities to pursue music education and performance.

The anonymous donors have chosen to remain unnamed, keeping the focus on the students and programs benefiting from their contributions.

HYS is using the milestone season and the $1.2 million investment as an opportunity to encourage alumni, parents, arts advocates, civic leaders and philanthropic partners to support the continued growth of music education throughout Greater Houston.

For students who receive financial assistance or participate in programs such as Coda and Melody, the investment represents more than additional music lessons. It expands access to an educational experience that might otherwise be out of reach.
