Photography by Vicky Pink - On Friday, May 24, 2013, Houston Style Magazine was on hand at the dedication and renaming program for Ernest McGowen Elementary School. Formerly Houston Gardens Elementary, the school was named in honor of Ernest McGowen, Sr. for his instrumental help in keeping the doors of the school open after the school’s roof collapsed in 1996. Cost of construction and low enrollment almost made Houston ISD closed the school without McGowen’s influence. Some in attendance were Ernest McGowen Sr.’s wife Jewel McGowen, McGowen Elementary School’s Principal Dana Arreola, former Secretary of Education Rod Paige, former HISD Trustee Carol Mims Galloway, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
