Photography by Vicky Pink On Friday, May 2, 2014, Houston Style Magazine was on hand at the Hilton University of Houston for the 45th Anniversary Celebration and Annual Scholarship Banquet hosted by the University of Houston African American Studies Program. Under the theme of “Celebrating the Legacy,” the organization honored Dr. Marguerite Ross Barnett, University of Houston’s first female African American President. The Keynote Speaker was Amy Barnett, current Editor-in-Chief of Ebony Magazine. She shared her mother’s influence of empowerment. Some in attendance were Melanie Lawson, Tammie Campbell, John Guess, Sharron Melton, Wayne Luckett, Cheryl and Percy Creuzot, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, State Rep. Sylvester Turner, Dr. Elwyn Lee, Helen George, Judge Hilary Green, Mary Sias, Audrey and Rev. William A. Lawson.
